Purim is a very special chag for me; my parents named me Esther because I was born around Purim time. Last year was the first time I consciously and properly celebrated purim, keeping the mitzvot and learning about it. I was very gifted to spend the meal at a dear teacher of mine in Efrat (Israel) and for me it was the past years holiest day – I just remember tears non-stop rolling down my cheeks while hearing the torah which was shared at the table and the music (one of nuriel he played guitar too!). To honor purim and it’s incredible depth and potential for connection, I want to share a few ideas !
First of all, the main idea of Purim, which also is the inspiration why we dress up, is the idea of concealment. Throughout the whole megilla of Esther which is read on Purim (which also is part of the Tanach – the holy scriptures in Judaism), we don’t read the name of G-d in any form even once. It‘s Yom Hakippurim – a day that Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar looks up to, the day that is seen as the completion of the giving of the Torah (because during the decree of haman to kill all the jews, they remained their strong belief and commitment, taking a step toward hashem whereas at the giving Torah it was hashem who made a step toward us ok sorry this is to deep of an idea to put into brackets), an ever celebrated account of one of the hugest miracles happened upon the Jewish nation, how can G-ds direct mention not even appear once? What can we learn from this?
Hashem performs miracles through “the laws of nature. – He did such a good job that people actually believe that this system runs itself! I write about this a lot and I probably will do so too in the future because this is so fundamental in our understanding of our existence.
From Kabbalah we learn that Hashem has different names, each focusing on His specific attributes that he expresses Himself through in the context the name is mentioned. Elokim for example represents G-ds presence in nature. During Purim, we witnessed a miracle that transcended any such attribute – it was from a place of G-ds essence that the Jewish people were saved during the reign of Achashverosh. And G‑d’s essence has no name.
Purim is a time to come together and celebrate – celebrate for a higher purpose and use the drinking, eating, dressing up for elevation and turn spiritual pleasures into holy joy. Esther’s despair before risking her life and walking up to the king Achashverosh channeled into redemption – may we too this year find ourselves able to turn our despair and hopeless situations into meaningful paths to redemption, finding ever greater strength and belief in Hashem, unmasking Him, seeing Him in our lives and how He works through nature to perform miracles, just as he did in the purim story.
